UI/UX Designer (Figma Expert) – Focused Initiative

Upwork

We are looking for a product designer with strong UI/UX skills who lives in Figma. Your mission is to approach established user experiences with fresh eyes, ask sharp questions, and design changes that reduce friction and increase clarity.

This role is not about aesthetics alone. Every proposal must tie directly to solving a user problem, delivering measurable impact, and meeting accessibility standards.

We are looking for someone who

  • Reimagines key user flows using first principles, user insights, and business goals.
  • Balance compliance requirements (eligibility checks, cookie consent, accessibility) with user delight.
  • Ensure designs meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards across desktop and mobile.
  • Prioritize clarity, speed, and trust over decoration or complexity.
  • ----

We’ll start with a focused, paid project designed to evaluate your approach.

Business Context

  • The brand we support operates across many territories in the United States. Although visitors often land on the national .com, each territory maintains a different sub-domain (and therefore a different digital experience).
  • As a federated business rule, all visitors must be verified by their home zip code before starting their buyer or discovery journey.
  • Historically, this verification has been handled via a popup modal at page entry.
  • At this same point in the journey, we want to encourage visitors to accept cookies, ideally opting into personalization cookies that pair them with a full, tailored experience.

User Context

  • 70% of visitors have actively purchased with the brand in the past 12 months.
  • The other 30% are in buyer mode - exploring benefits before subscribing.

This means

Returning customers expect to feel like valued, recognized visitors. New prospects want to browse freely without feeling pushed. Both groups still need to be politely but clearly prompted for their home zip code at entry.

Scope

A single screen, modal, or connected set of components addressing:

  • Zip code entry with validation & error messaging.
  • Cookie consent opt-in, with respect for user preferences.
  • Optional personalization prompt – Consider whether and how to invite a visitor to share an identifier (e.g., customer number or equivalent) that could enhance their personalized experience. This should not feel forced or create unnecessary friction, but it should be explored as a potential value-add.

Must balance

  • Business compliance (territory verification, cookie consent, accessibility).
  • Visitor psychology (valued returning customer vs. cautious new prospect).
  • Accessibility – fully compliant with WCAG 2.2 AA.
  • Avoid over-styling; keep the solution lightweight, intuitive, and respectful of user intent.

How We Evaluate

We will score your work using a clear rubric

  • Usability & Intuitiveness – Is the design clear and frictionless for both mobile and desktop users?
  • Compliance Integration – Does it balance rules (territory verification, cookie consent, WCAG 2.2 AA) with UX delight?
  • Error Handling & Messaging – Are states clear, empathetic, and accessible?
  • Interaction Behavior – Is sequencing intuitive?
  • Craft in Figma – File structure, components, variants.
  • Communication – Clear rationale, user-first storytelling.
  • ----

After the initial evaluation project, we will collaboratively:

  • Audit current journeys and write crisp problem statements.
  • Design flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity UI in Figma.
  • Validate quickly with lightweight research and usability checks.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and data teams to scope, ship, and measure.
  • Evolve a lightweight design system/tokens for consistency and speed.
  • Own a prioritized roadmap of UX improvements tied to impact.
  • Ensure every deliverable meets WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards.

Must-Have Experience

  • 5+ years in product design or UX for complex web apps or content-heavy sites.
  • Portfolio with shipped work showing path from insight → impact → metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and evaluate against WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility guidelines.
  • Advanced Figma skills: Auto Layout, constraints, variables, component properties, variants.
  • Experience with interactive prototyping, conditional logic, micro-interactions.
  • Strong communication skills, able to explain decisions clearly.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with design tokens/theming.
  • Motion/micro-interaction skills.
  • Familiarity with analytics, heatmaps, and session replays.
