UI/UX & Figma Consultant (Ad Hoc) for Internal Dev Team

Upwork

We’re seeking a seasoned UI/UX designer and Figma expert to provide on-demand consulting for our internal development team. You will field complex design and implementation questions, review prototypes, troubleshoot Figma workflows, and ensure seamless hand-off between design and code.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary design consultant for our in-house developers
  • Answer technical questions around Figma features, prototyping, and component libraries
  • Review and critique existing UI/UX designs for usability, consistency, and accessibility
  • Set up and maintain a scalable design system in Figma (styles, components, variants)
  • Conduct ad-hoc “office hours” (via Slack/Zoom) to unblock developers on design-related issues
  • Document best practices and create quick-start guides for the team
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and Engineers to translate requirements into pixel-perfect interfaces

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on UI/UX design with Figma as your primary tool
  • Deep mastery of Figma features: Auto Layout, Variants, Interactive Components, Plugins
  • Strong understanding of design systems, atomic design principles, and component libraries
  • Experience working alongside development teams—understanding HTML/CSS/JS constraints
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable explaining complex concepts
  • Ability to troubleshoot live Figma files and propose rapid solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in front-end development (React, Vue, or similar)
  • Experience with design tokens and cross-platform style guides
  • Familiarity with agile/scrum workflows and project-management tools (Jira, Trello, Asana)
  • Previous track record of mentoring or running “design office hours”

Engagement Details

  • Type: Ad hoc consulting (hourly)
  • Estimated Hours: 5–15 hrs/month, flexible based on needs
  • Communication: Slack, Zoom, email—quick response expected during core hours
  • Time Zone: Ideally overlap with Central Time (UTC–05:00) but fully remote is OK

How to Apply

  • Please include in your proposal:
  • Portfolio link showcasing Figma projects and any design systems you’ve built
  • Short case study (1–2 paragraphs) of a complex Figma challenge you solved
  • Your hourly rate and typical availability (hours/week)
  • A brief note on your preferred consulting workflow (e.g., how you structure ad-hoc support)
